Hi! My name is Alifia Lailatur Rahmi, you can call me Alifia or Lifi. Now, I am studying in early childhood education at Universitas Negeri Malang. Thanks to God, this year I was able to join the SEA Teacher batch 10 program at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP). During this program, I gained many new friends, new experiences, and new learnings that motivate me to become a professional teacher for my students in the future. 💫 SNAPSHOT MEMORIES 💖

1. SCHOOL: GENERAL INFORMATION AND ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION
A. School Profile
University of Northern Philippines (UNP) is a leading public university located
in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Established in 1971, UNP is known for
its commitment to providing quality education and promoting research and
community service. UNP offers a wide range of academic programmes at the
undergraduate and graduate levels, including fields such as education,
engineering, business, health, and social sciences. CTE or College of Teacher Education, is one of the faculties in UNP. It is led by Dr. Ma. Teresa
Susan L. Manzano as the dean of CTE.
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP)
Laboratory kindergarten is a pioneering educational facility that provides
early childhood education in a nurturing and innovative environment. Serving as
a practical training ground for future educators, the preschool offers a
child-centred curriculum that focuses on the holistic development of young
students. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of play, creativity, social
skills, and basic academic concepts. As part of UNP's commitment to quality
education, the kindergarten Laboratorium also serves as a research centre,
where teaching methods and strategies for early childhood education are
explored and implemented. Aurelia T. Vitamog, EdD, RGC as a Principal. Clarita
P. Pere, EdD as an Assistant Principal. Cristian Reiner Pola and Charmaine Leah
Navarro as a Faculty and teacher in Kindergarten.

B. Academic Support System
UNP
Kindergarten laboratory school has facilities in the form of 2 classrooms, 10
tables, 25 chairs, and 2 whiteboards. Each classroom has a television that the
teacher uses to display material or play learning videos. Thus, learning
becomes more interesting and fun with technological facilities that support
learning. Each classroom is also equipped with a restroom. That way, children
get used to being independent to do their personal activities.
The
teaching system at UNP kindergarten laboratory school is student-centered.
Where, the teacher acts as a facilitator in learning. Where the focus of the
teaching system here is to develop 21st century skills in children, namely
critical thinking, creative and innovative, collaboration, and communication.

2. PEDAGOGICAL CONTENT
As I mentioned, at UNP kindergarten
laboratory school the teaching method is student-centered. Based on my
observations, the teacher's role in the classroom is as a facilitator. Teachers
provide opportunities for children to explore learning materials, dare to
express opinions and provide trigger questions that spur children's critical
thinking skills. Examples of learning materials provided are also contextual to
the environment around the child, so that the learning provided is more
meaningful because it is related to everyday life.
To support learning and improve children's
understanding of learning materials, teachers also utilize technology as an
alternative learning medium. Technology used such as YouTube videos, power
points, images, animations, and others. In addition, teachers still use
non-digital learning media in implementing learning, for example picture books,
writing books, reading books, and others.
The assessment applied at UNP kindergarten lab school
is authentic assessment. Assessment is not only done at the end of learning,
but also during the learning process. The assessment sheet is in the form of a
checklist. Contains assessments on aspects of cognitive development, emotional
development, physical motor development, language development, self-help
aspects.
3. TEACHING PLAN
A. Curriculum
The
curriculum applied at UNP Kindergarten Lab school is Matatag Curriculum (K2)
Re-Inverted Curriculum Guide by Clarita Rere. The curriculum focuses on the
holistic development of young children, which includes cognitive, social,
emotional, and physical growth. The curriculum emphasises the importance of
play-based learning, hands-on activities and interactive experiences to foster
creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The curriculum also
highlights the development of values, social responsibility, and emotional
resilience, preparing children for future academic success and personal growth.
The Matatag curriculum aims to create a positive, engaging, and supportive
learning environment for learners.
B. Teaching Plan
Before
learning, teachers prepare lesson plans so that learning runs according to the
curriculum and learning objectives can be achieved. In the second week, I
started to prepare the lesson plan according to the direction of my cooperating
teacher and based on the applicable curriculum. I realized that there are
differences in the form of lesson plans in the Philippines and Indonesia. Of
course, this is very interesting for me, because the lesson plan that I made in
the Philippines is in the form of a script, making it easier for me to organize
learning activities. In addition, I was also guided to create interesting and
meaningful learning media for students. This gave me new knowledge in designing
lessons.
4. TEACHING PRACTICE
A. Procedures of Teaching
I did
demo teaching on December 3, 2024 in class K1 with the topic of letter Hh.
Before doing demo teaching, I prepared the lesson plan and learning media to be
used. On the day of my demo teaching, the class started with singing the
national song, followed by prayer and apperception (singing and dancing). After
that, I did a review related to the previous material to check how far the
students' understanding was. After the review, the next stage is motivation
where I use stories to attract students' attention. Then, followed by the
discussion stage, fixing skills, and the last stage is evaluation.
B. Time Management and Organizing Activities
Based
on my observations and when I did demo teaching, the duration of learning at
UNP kindergarten lab school is 2 hours. The first lesson lasts for 1 hour, then
break and snack time for 10-15 minutes, and the last 45 minutes for learning
writing, counting, or reading. The duration of learning implemented is ideal in
accordance with learning in kindergarten. If the learning is too long, students
will feel bored, especially in kindergarten the duration of children's focus is
very short. So, learning is carried out in the form of games and the duration
of learning is not too long.
C. Classroom Management
Classroom
management is crucial to the learning process in the classroom. When I did
teaching assistant in K2 and demo teaching in K1, I felt that this is where my
classroom management skills were tested. At first, I found it a little
difficult to manage the class because of the large number of students in one
class and the different characters of each student. However, with the guidance
of the cooperating teacher, I felt helped and understood how to manage the
class to keep it conducive. When the class started to get crowded and not
conducive, I would count and ask the students to sit on their chairs. The
students and I also make rules that must be agreed upon, such as raising your
hand when you want to speak and others. Therefore, learning can be more
conducive and comfortable.
D. Problem Solving While Teaching and Staying In The Designated School
Of
course, the problem I experienced when doing demo teaching or assistant
teaching was the language. Not all students speak English, they usually use
their local language, ilokano. However, this was not a big problem because my
cooperating teacher and my buddies always helped me to translate what they
said. In addition, another problem was that there were students who wanted to
get more attention from me, if I ignored him, he would cry. Therefore, I always
paid attention to him and told him that he had to be patient in waiting for his
turn. From all the problems that occurred, it made me learn many new things
about how to give attention to my students. There is something very interesting
for me, when I was at UNP kindergarten lab school it was my first experience of
having students with special needs. That's where I learned a lot of things
about how we pay attention to them, teach them in different ways, and what to
do when they start to tantrum.
SUMMERY AND SUGGESTIONS
SEA Teacher batch 10 gave me many new
experiences that are very valuable. I am very grateful to be able to join this
wonderful program. I never thought I could get the experience of teaching
abroad and meeting great people. SEA Teacher has convinced me to continue
learning to be a professional teacher who teaches with sincerity.
The challenges and obstacles that I
experienced while implementing the SEA Teaher program became my motivation to
continue learning and developing. Meeting great students who have their own
uniqueness made me realize that I still need to learn many things to be a great
teacher. The moment when I made lesson plans and prepared learning media was
one of the interesting things because lesson plans in the Philippines are
different from those in Indonesia. This gave me the opportunity to prepare more
specific and mature learning activities so that learning objectives can be
achieved.
I can only say thank you to everyone
involved in my learning journey in SEA Teacher batch 10. Thank you to Mr. Dem,
Mr. Jay, my cooperating teachers Ma'am Leah and Mr. Reiner, all of my lovely
buddies, Kuya Lorenz, and all of my lovely students K1 and K2.
I hope you are always in good health and we
can meet again in the another opportunities.💗😊
Best Regards
